Ted Kooser: US Poet Laureate from 2004 to 2006.

American Life in Poetry
A weekly poetry column by Ted Kooser

Linda's poem "Planting Peas" was shared the week of August 11th through 17th, 2014 as column number 490 by American Life in Poetry, a project by Ted Kooser (US Poet Laureate from 2004 to 2006) that provides newspapers with a free weekly poetry column.

Linda was told that the readership in 2014 was about 3,000,000 per week. Newspapers receive a pdf and print the column per their weekly schedule. In addition, a large number of readers receive the column via free e-mail subscription sent around the world-- such places as Nepal, Indonesia, Uganda, Bangladesh, The Netherlands, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, most of Europe, Mexico, Korea, India, the Philippines, Turkey, Viet Nam and Myanmar, Canada and the U.K., as well as U.S. readers from Maine to Hawaii.

Linda wrote:

When I write a poem, I have a vague picture that people somewhere else will read it-- but it's hard to picture readers in Peru, Viet Nam, or The Netherlands, in any kind of detail. And yet because I know that in all those places people plant seeds for food, and mourn the grandmothers who taught them to plant, who taught them so much, I know that readers in those places might identify with this poem. The idea leaves me breathless. I am unlikely ever to shake hands with a woman from Myanmar who recalls her grandmother's hands, but by writing, I have done so. We have looked into each other's eyes and nodded, and smiled.

Writing can do this for us all.

Dry Crik Review

Dry Crik Review of Contemporary Cowboy Poetry, a periodical edited by John Dofflemyer was published by his Dry Crik Press from 1991-1994. Each issue noted that it was "Dedicated to the well-crafted and artful insights of a disappearing breed of men and women" and was somewhat controversial because it published free verse along with traditional rhyming forms.

Dry Crik Review resumed publishing on the internet in 2010 at www.drycrikreview.com and drycrikreview.wordpress.com.

The Dry Crik Review website states that it aims to be "an eclectic site that offers poetry, prose and potentially other mediums and forms of art from rural cultures, with particular prejudice for contemporary expression from the American West." Currently, unsolicited submissions are not accepted.

Linda's poems at Dry Crik Review are:

The Barn Doors found here.

Instead of a Death Wish found here.

Morning News on Windbreak Road found here.

My Uncle Makes Up His Mind found here.

New Letters

“Rabid” appeared in New Letters volume 79, issue 3 & 4, published summer 2013. The essay tells of some of my childhood at work on the ranch and at play in the Black Hills, the differences between my workaholic father and my less-driven uncle “Tru,” and my brush with a potentially rabid cat.

“Rabid” was announced as the runner up winner of the New Letters Readers Awards as the readers’ second-favorite favorite essay for Volume 79, Issues 1 through 4, 2012-2013.

People's Poetry

For three days in April, 1999, Linda and about 5,500 other people gathered in New York City for poetry readings, conversations and performances. Among other events, Linda participated in a late-night poetry slam that pitted cowboy poets against inner city poets in a smokey bar. Alas, the cowboy poets lost the competition due to inexperience, though they improved after the first round and began winning the applause of the audience.

For an audio clip of Linda reading her poem "Hands," go to the People's Poetry website, click on “Audio & Video Excerpts” then select “Past Clips” and “1999 Clips.” Scroll down to find Linda’s name. To hear the clip you need to have any MP3 compatible player including RealPayer, Windows MediaPlayer, or Apple's iTunes.

If you don’t have that capability or wish to read it yourself, you can find "Hands" in the book Dakota Bones (1993, Spoon River Poetry Press).

This People’s Poetry Gathering was sponsored by City Lore and Poet’s House.
Read more about them on the People's Poetry website.

South Dakota Magazine

In the May/June 2015 issue, "Letters to Graduates"
My letter was one of a number chosen for publication. I wrote about my expectations for my life as I was graduating college, how I have accomplished some of my goals, and how I have come to believe that, as my father used to quote, "a man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be."

In the July/August 2015 issue, "Saving South Dakota's Birds of Prey: The Black Hills Raptor Center"
One of my favorite local non-profits, the Black Hills Raptor Center is in the process of expanding their mission of education of the public and rehabilitation of raptors and owls by building a new facility. I hope my article will bring them more publicity and donations. Chip in a little to help the birds, if you are so inclined. See their website at BlackHillsRaptorCenter.org
